Design of a Shaft under Torsional and Axial Loads

The aim of this project is to design and optimize a circular shaft with a specified length and minimum weight so that it can both bear a specified torsional and axial load without yielding.These parameters can best be seen in the figure as shown below:


More important than the loads and lengths however, are our three principle constraints: The Safety Factor must be greater than or equal to 2, the Angle of Twist for the shaft must not exceed 0.05 rad, and the Axial Displacement must not be larger than 2 mm. Now, to understand how we designed our shaft, we need to understand the equations behind these constraints. Assuming a solid uniform rod, using the applicable formulas, and through the use of MATLAB, a final
design was able to be determined.
